I was speaking to an ex-Vancouverite last week.  The principle reason for her leaving that Province was the building that was going on.  As she said, 'the houses were being built higher and higher up the hillsides - being crammed into impossible places.  They made me uncomfortable - it's as if they'd never heard of the San Francisco earthquake, and it's bound to strike.'

Because of my DIL, I've had numerous chances to visit Japan but, because of work, never got around to going. Some of her family came to visit me in the bush, and I found them to be as you say - very kind and 'honorable'. It's heartbreaking to watch what is happening there.

The Japanese value a great sense of community
--something we sorely lack  in a culture that is about personal entitlement over the needs of community.

I spent a year over there and feel in love with these honorable people. They live their lives like most Americans dream they could live theirs. We had about the same post today, you must watch the news like I do...seeing what is not covered instead of what they try to sell you.

Son #1 was stationed in Japan for three years at Yokosuka Naval Base and aboard the Blue Ridge LCC-19 which is now assigned to helping in the stricken area.  He is horrified at what has and is happening there.  I also am horror stricken, but it is not as personal to me as it is to him.

I have never been to Japan either, but some years ago I spent 6 months on Japanese ships, doing a bit of research. (Maybe I'll do some posts on that one of these days.) It was a great experience, and I was very impressed with these people! I even learned a bit of Japanese, although I have lost most of it by now. (The remedy for that, getting a Japanese girlfriend, would encounter too much resistance from my LSW, LOL.)

The country is bearing up admirably under this terrible triple disaster! And there's been no looting or rioting, which is something our media have been silent about, for obvious reasons...

Yes, I agree...they are really handling it well...grace under pressure is
a great way to put it.
