Beautiful post.  What a lovely and loving mother you had, and were to your own.

And in those 'good ole days', women did not get much support. There were no talk shows nor magazine articles nor psychologists to help her understand and deal with her fears. A wonderful ode to your mom, Pat_B. I'm sure it would warm her heart to read it.

Your Mother must have had such a tough time and I bet she hated

having to scrimp and scrape and I bet she went without herself so her children could have more.....how important it used to be to look neat and clean tidy and middle class.

She loved her family so much but it must have seemed as a child that perhaps she didn't. I am glad that as you grew up you grew in appreciation of her...but then, you too are a very special Lady.

We were at an auction on Saturday (surprise). The girl (30 ish) sitting beside us was bidding for items to furnish a house.  One of her acquisitions had a sewing box in it. She opened the box and held up a needle.  "What on earth is this for?  Who could possibly use a needle of this size?"

"It's for darning socks," I told her.

"For what?"

I considered explaining darning in this throw-away world, but decided against it. "I dunno,"  I shrugged
