I think most of us certainly hope that Egypt does adopt democracy. I also think that many of us wouldn't stake our lives on it. Time will tell. And, of course, if they do turn to Islam, there is no way I can see you gloating because your suspicions turn out to be right! Au contraire - I truly expect you would be very distressed!

A Democracy can exist as a permanent form of government only until a majority of voters discovers that they can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury. In the U.S. we live in a Republic.

Naut
This is an excellent post. There will not be democracy in the Middle Eastern part of the world. Actually I would not care if they would stay in their own environment where that sort of thing is acceptable to them; however, to bring it here is outrageous and sad that our citizenry does not understand it. I wrote on the same thing today. Some things can be seen at the basic level if one is looking for truth over political correctness.

The key for me is repression; as long as it's successful it will control by whatever law/religion/government holds the upper hand! Shelly

If you are referring to me,
please clarify how my noting a poll's results were based on 1000 people, which was not/is not a majority of Egypt's population - a poll you named in your post - how was this "taking a shot?" or how was it insulting, as one of your commenters suggested? And how was my pointing out that calling Islam a disease, which was stated in another of your posts was actually insulting? And that it was ironic you ask for civil debate in the same breath as calling Islam a disease? I am not wrong about the poll nor the insult and I think you wish to demean me to deflect this truth..classic, lol.

If you insist on saying I am wrong, again, I ask you to
explain.

A waiting game.

I don't know who your opponent is, but I can tell you that I think your
predictions are right on...if Egypt accepts a democracy and not some sort of amalgamation of Islam and state, I will be surprised, as will many.

You love it when your counterpart hands you your argument on a platter but I love when debate happens between to worthwhile bloggers... not the ones that scream and insult, but those who respect their opponents and seek to find the truth of the matter. Very interesting post Naut and though I also hope and wish you are wrong... I am afraid deep in my heart I know you are most probably right about the outcome of this mess in Egypt... Be well and have a wonderful Valentine :-) xoxoxo
