- Go to Appalachian Trail Shelter: late dusk
Wow... I am glad you called my attention to this one Bob... I loved it. I felt I was there, smelled the smoke and felt the anxiety of watching the girth of the fire, the need to protect it and the pride of having created it. That is what good writing is all about :-) xoxoxo

I really liked this Bob - Every line I followed with anticipation, but read slowly so I could savor. Very good -

Re: Thank you' CC
We might be thinking of the same story, Jack London's "To Build a Fire". The guy finally froze to death. I didn't.

Re: Appalachian trail shelter
Thanks! I love "the crackle of silence" - that certainly figures into the experience when you're alone up there .

Dear me Bob I feel you only had one match reminded me of a tale where a man had the same out in a snow swept country he lit the fire under a tree and the snow melted and fell putting it out. I liked your poem better.

I love this - the imagery is vivid and the details so precise I feel like I could light a fire now
