All these bereavements are sad. It may be "only a fish", but fishes can be important too.

Oh poor Henry, I know how you have cared for this fish and yes they are
such pretty creatures and yes company even. The cat and the doggie are old so it isn't your fault if something happens.

Even the slightest temp. change can kill a betta...
At least that's what all the info on the internet will tell you.
Our betta is at or surpassing his life expectancy (3 years max: they are 6-12 months when you get them at the store). I've never used a heater or anything to heat his one gallon tank. I truly think he likes it a bit colder than the recommended temperature.
You should never change any fish to a drastic temp. change, but give the water a chance to reach room temperature (about 2 hours). To shorten this time, I have a big plastic container that I bought the original water for his tank in. I keep it filled and when I clean his tank, the water is already basically room temp when I pour it into the tank...then I just fill it again for next time. I will let him sit in the cup a few minutes beside the tank, just to make sure the temps are close enough.
Should also add something to remove the chlorine from the water, or if you had hard water like me, get something to remove the minerals (they sell drops).
Also, I don't know if you are aware, but never give yourself or anyone/anything else hot/warm water from the facet. It's been said that while running hot water, lead from the pipes can seep into the water and you could get lead poisoning.
Mom used to have me take the dog hot water outside in the winter (she had no idea about lead or that hot water freezes faster than cold water, etc.) ... the dog never died of lead poisoning...but better to be safe than sorry.
