I may be wrong, but it sounds as if everyone isn't familiar with the expression? It was a favorite graffitti message
scrawled by American WW2 GI's, especially in improbable places (for instance, the Himalayas, anywhere behind enemy lines, remote installations, etc.)

I would imagine Bob this was an old soldier who shunned society and just wanted to live quietly ever after. The sound of the cannon had broken his world.
