I have known of many people who for one reason or another gave up on life, sometimes without really trying. You convey the state this person is so well.

For me it is just a sense of wondering if this woman is really wanting to live. Of course, I am keeping my mouth shut about it all to everyone else.
I really did have the conversation with her about happiness many years ago and when I asked, she looked at me as if I had two heads. I don't think she even comprehends happiness. Which just makes me sadder about the whole situation.
I think about what all the children have been through and what they will go through no matter how this turns out and it breaks my heart.
