Do you think Jag knows you are experimenting with him and writing about him and that people out there in netherland that he has never seen or heard know about him and how he acts and reacts?

I am enjoying this study of yours Naut --- my pack does do certain things that I know are of higher intelligence; except for my Pug --- that is a breed that I've yet to understand.  I cannot for the life of me get him to listen to one thing I ask.  He's a case of "what genes do you share? and what size brain do you have?"  LOL --- It sounds like Jag is on to you but, he also wants to be a dog as well sometimes.  I love animals.  I do enjoy this blog ~ Elyse

Interesting.  As research for a magazine assignment, I just got off the phone with a Dog Shrink - aka Animal Behaviorist - who deals with phobias, separation anxiety and other behavioral problems in animals.  He spoke about the pre-departure anxiety displayed when the dog sees your "leaving rituals" unfold.  Of course, dogs can tell when you're leaving.  One of his most outlandish cases was a dog that was so scared, he ate through an apartment closet wall, into the neighbor's apartment and ate the neighbor's couch.  Give me a cat any day......Mal

There was recently a series on CNN about animal intelligence.  Consciousness, theory of mind... a few of all the parts of a pretty amazing whole!

In another, an experiment showed that a dog (that one any way) would leave alone the tasty treat at dog level if The Boss was observing, and the dog had been informed, "No!"  or some equivalent.  Dog behaved well, ignoring the treat as long as The Boss's eyes were open.  When she closed them... Dog wasted no time removing the treat from the zone of temptation, to the zone of satisfaction.

Naut
My father raised and trained dogs. I know they are smart. I have a cat that converses with me that is the way our relationship goes. This cat loves George because he pets her, feeds her and carries her around. You are talking more about can they reason that do they simply know it seems. I can see you love that dog and he loves you. That is the heart of the relationship, who cares if he knows all the finer points?

I wonder if a study has been done to observe how the dogs react to the leader within the pack and its possible correlation to how they react to the leader i.e. human. Perhaps it's all a matter of learned behavior! The gives the treat for the behavior that is mastered, and I wonder what happens in the wild in the pack! Maybe we are all in the Skinner box so to speak! Shelly

LMAO at Pat's comment! If it's any help to your analysis, when my Bud knows I'm not happy with him, he hides....or thinks he's hiding. He'll stick his head behind a couch or chair, with the rest of him sticking out. Because he can't see me, he thinks I can't see him, LOL.

The example of your dog illustrates the case you make very well.

I do know that domestic animals have been around us long enough for
evolution to develop an ability for them not to just pick up on our body language but the spoken language as well....they can't speak it no....but Graysome has all sorts of language for us to have learned and for peace in Camelot, we work hard to understand him. As forhim.....what he knows when we talk is amazing...as was my last cat....and sound...she lovedopera...all voices from the Soprano to the bass and the orchestra as well. She would sit still glued to the tv all the way through an Opera video.

Some days I have trouble believing that people have a theory of mind...
We all seem to pull stupid stunts that seemed like a good idea at the time.
