The Acquisition Editor is the first line of defense for publishers. The AE reads or not reads, the query letters, synopsis and perhaps a page or two to decide whether the work is within the publisher's marketing plan. If it passes muster - that is the one in several hundred, the AE will pass it along for further consideration within the editorial staff. Indie authors (who have taken advantage of the new revolution in publishing) eliminate this step. Other editoing functions, however, are assumed by Indie authors as essential for a quality read.
