Strength and vigilance -- military terminology that is probably all too
appropriate for the job at hand. Being on guard against temptation, soldiering on when the body complains, standing fast... But it worked, and you're a non-smoker now.
I hope you haven't given up on your other "vice," writing. I seem to remember a rough and tumble detective who knew how to handle himself in a crunch. I hope he's doing well.
