Could be he is reacting to your increased anxiety about him...?
I've heard that dogs echo our feelings, acting out what we seem to expect whether it is positive or negative.

so is this the end of the line? are we not going to get any more
walk the dog feed the dog stories? I refuse to accept that, and when you say early morning, what does that mean 6am? or 7am? or 5am? for me early monring is 6am unreasonable early is 5am and just early enough to get to work ontime is 7am etc etc.
