Like I have mentioned elsewhere, the "teachable moment" here
would have been to point out that a church or synagogue could not be built in Saudi Arabia and that none of the religious freedoms we have here are at all present in our so-called ally. He then could have demanded that Saudi Arabia remove provisions in its Constitution and laws under which apostasy from Islam is a capital offense and immediately institute freedom of religion and conscience or face the end of trade, aid and diplomatic relations.

Actually that's not true... (45Park is a condo building, I'm sure they don't have a mosque) but at the Park51 website you find the following listed under the
facilities tab: Park51 will grow into a world-class community center, planned to include the following facilities:
- outstanding recreation spaces and fitness facilities (swimming pool, gym, basketball court)
- a 500-seat auditorium
- a restaurant and culinary school
- cultural amenities including exhibitions
- education programs
- a library, reading room and art studios
- childcare services
- a mosque, intended to be run separately from Park51 but open to and accessible to all members, visitors and our New York community
Which leads to a question I have asked in a post and received no reply....
Will Gay Muslims be allowed to attend the Park 51 mosque?

I am going to differ with most comments here - and your sentiments, Naut. See my post/link today for Keith Olbermann's comments. This whole anti-"mosque" thing has gotten out of hand. 45Park is not a mosque, not on ground zero - a Community Center that promotes tolerance, and includes a gym and culinary school. It's being built as place similar to the 92nd Street Y (which is a YMHA - for Hebrew Association - to this will be a YMMA of sorts) where all people are welcome. We wanted Moderate Muslims, we got em. And now there's this outcry against them? Mal

this makes too much sense, but who is our president really????
he is the president of the hate and ignorant element of our country, just like you would find right here on blogit those who would support this horrid, and to top it off they would claim that they are so full of love, and those who oppose are just full of hate. I think its a great technique, accuse everybody that opposes you of hate...
Not all muslims are terrorists, granted
but all terrorists are muslims, All suicide terrorist camps are muslims, all death missions to kill and be killed are muslim. Does that mean that every muslim is a terrorist NO, but why dont the good peaceful muslims stand up and fight against these murderers? is it because they agree with them or are afraid to die by them?

Obama understands Islam quite well, being a member, he would have to. It is time America wakes up, shakes off the ether and realizes what he is all about and does something about it before he ruins America forever. His agenda is to run America.........into the ground!!!

HOw can they even consider building a mosque there? and our "president" is all for it? that building would be a constant reminder to all of us about what happened on 9/11 . A few days ago I responded to another blog on the subject by pointing out that building that mosque there would be like playing videos of fires to patients in a burn unit or movies of violent automobil crashes to the parents of children killed in trafic accidents... Though the fires in the videos are not the ones that hurt the patients and the crashes in the movies have nothing to do with the death of the children , still viewing them would cause untold misery . A bunch of crazed muslims did a horrible thing to all of us and the muslims that are to attend that mosque might very well be outstanding Americans but still the mere prescence of the building there , so close to where so many inocents died would be like a thorn in the heart of NYC and our Nation as a hwole... How insensitive of our president not to realize that.

This is the same President who........
last year, requested that Georgetown University cover up the Roman Catholic icons and symbols that adorn the interior of the hall where he spoke, including the monogram "IHS" which symbolizes the name of Jesus Christ.
"Unshakable commitment to religious freedom" indeed........
To me, building a mosque two blocks from the scene of the world's deadliest terrorist attack, which was perpetrated in the name of Islam by Muslim fanatics, makes about as much sense as building a monument in the shape of a swastika outside the gates of Auschwitz.
To paraphrase Clint Eastwood, freedom's got nothin' to do with it.
This is simply about what is appropriate and what is not. And it is not appropriate to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero.
That our President does not realize this seems to clearly illustrate just how out-of-whack his sense of ethics is......compared with that of the people he was elected to govern. His addressing the subject yet again shows he does not know when to keep his mouth closed makes this incident even more frustrating. Do we have another Beer summit coming our way?
