Once while working in Greenwich Village in the early 70's, I saw such a pursuit heading my way (just the woman and the purse snatcher), and as the thief ran right by me, I hadn't the presence of mind to just stick out my foot and trip him. When I mentioned the incident to a co-worker the next day, he asked if there was a cop in sight. I said, "No, but..." He said, "Just as well. He was probably an addict.
