Re: Excellent post, Dsm!
Katray, Yes, historically -- and I plan to use quotes from Cicero to back this up -- emotions and pesonal destruction of the opponent -- known as
ad hominem attacks -- have always been used to sway the mob. But hey, if we have learned anything...well, you know. Thanks for the nice, thoughtful response!

Excellent post, Dsm!
I used to write daily in the news and politics category and admittedly there were times when attempting to convey a message crossed over into being mostly my opinion, instead of clear and factual presentations. Come to think of it, I've probably done so recently..

I see this happen with other bloggers too, on both sides of the issues. Do you think it's reality that opinion pieces, editorials, etc. have a power of persuasion frequently equal to or even greater than facts? Even if the opinions expressed are heavily partisan, overwrought with personal beliefs and/or agenda based and have little in common with the facts or a clear thinking process? Many readers, being short on time, patience, tolerance, etc. will accept and believe said opinions as the whole truth and nothing but if they have an emotional response that is in line with the emotions being offered. I think readers also need to become much more aware of their reactions and willing to dig a little deeper for the whole picture - my opinion...:)
Well expressed and thought provoking - Thank you!

I'm sober and my clear thinking can only hold onto that. Politics is all about thinking that 'The remedy for wrongs is to forget them' as Syrus said. That was a good clear post my friend.

I wish there was more discourse, so that we could all work for resolutions to the issues facing us today. I find everything to become a black and white issue with name calling. There are definitely better ways in which to articulate one's opinions.
