D.G. It made me think of the time I planted blackcurrant trees anmd picked and sold them for sixpence a pound sale or return and many were. It taught me to find a market before before
planting anything again.

Re: FSI
Yes, you are probably right. Those experiences taught me no one will take care of me. I have to do it myself. And, I didn't have a special relationship with either of my grandmas to kind of boost my sense of being loved!

Re: Sam
Yes, I think you are right. I would not be so independent and able to take care of myself were it not for the hardships of my childhood!

Re: Taps
I used to hate that Dolly Parton song about the Coat of Many Colors because she talked about the love in their family. I think if you feel loved and appreciated as a child then doing without all the niceties is not so bad.

I had some lean times during my childhood having worked in the fields picking berries to get my school clothes from sixth grade on! But it makes us stronger in the long run! sam

Losing hope is one of the worst feelings. I've done it several times, and it has been hard to get out of it. I can't imagine what it would be like to have had that feeling when my age was in the single digits. Thankfully you have turned out alright from what I gather from your posts. I believe the same will hold true for your granddaughter.

This post brought back a lot of memories of a lot of people in my childhood days. I saw people with no hope. I also saw people with no gumption, probably because they had no hope. We had some hard times in our family, like when Dad was on strike from Ford Plant for two whole years. But he set a good example for us, always working at something and he always fed us and Mom made us clothes out of flowered chicken-feed sacks.

Re: I remember having to make do with at most two pairs of pants and two shirts
I think what bothers me the most was the disappointment of broken promises.
