I forgot to add in my previous comment that I can feel your fear at the time with regard to not wanting to show off and get into trouble. You had me feeling it too.

One of those times where everyone came down with something...

It is fortunate for those who have or have had the love of a true mother to not be able to fathom neglect or intentional harm. I have had several mother substitutes that have and would fight to the death for me, and I could never imagine them bringing harm to those they love, either. It just isn't in their makeup. My hats off to those women.

Dear One
I don't think my comment sounded as I ment it. What I think is there was meanness on your father's part in your household to a zenith degree. Your mother was afraid of him. She was always concerned about her position with him and the little show of approval of the rain showers were a gift. The stupidity about the games if bigger than she could manage. I think she did and does love you...

Honey I caught everything that came down the pike. I even gave my mother measles. I think this had little or nothing to do with a Mama trying to steal a bit of fun time for kids. Ignorant of the outcome she may have been but innocent of harm me thinks... Love to you, j

I remember getting the measles and the whooping cough and lots of ear infections back before antibiotics, but I don't think those things were because of my mother's care or lack of it.  I think it was in spite of her care.  I was very fortunate in the parents I was given.

Showing off

Well Darson not a very wise thing to let kids splash in puddles all the muck of the road and animals etc. I know it was fun but a large bath tub or bowl even would have been better.

I know kids had more immunity to bugs even in your day probably, but it seems strange that three healthy kids all caught the sickness. My Dad had pneumonia  3 times and it nearly killed him in his day. I once saw my younger brother running around with a mouse in his mouth pretending to be a cat, I was only little but I thought it was funny.
