You’ve described the scene well – but I do not share your interpretation.
I don’t think ‘he left her behind’ at all, and was not driven by an impatient desire for a cup of coffee! His little bit of foolishness was for her! Had she not been with him, he would have waited with all the rest.
But at an age where young men no longer have horses and jump hedgerows to impress their lovers, they will sometimes dodge traffic on their bicycles…
And her smile shows she understood, and that she did not feel abandoned. It may well have been a kind of ‘boys will be boys' smile, but she also knew that his ‘derring-do’ was a little mating dance for her, and her alone, and made her proud…
