I believe as well that immigrants should make every effort they can to learn a new language. If anything for safety purposes I would want to know.

What A Topic!

There is no debate here at all. If you come here from another country then learn the language. Why is that so difficult to understand? If I visit Germany and plan on living there then would it not make common sense to learn and speak and write the language? Either learn it or get out.

My son is 8 years old and is the second grade. He attends a charter school...you know the kind, the kind that liberals hate because they work...unlike a public school in which our child attended in kindergarten and first grade. He takes Spanish and Chinese IN THE SECOND GRADE! He will take Latin and Greek in a few years. So it appears if my son can take these languages then why in the hell can't a Mexican learn English? NO EXCUSE! Either learn it or go back to Mexico. I get so tired of the sappy crap however, GREAT POST AND VERY THOUGHT PROVOKING! I just wished more people had common sense.

I think it is very important to know the language of the country. I know for a fact that however, English being the universal language is a must to know if you seek advancement. The older generation however feel very protective over the loss of their spoken mother tongue. This is something that we are going through at this moment of time here in our country. Children should be taught that learning different languages is always a plus point with no discrimination and giving due importance to the language of the country.

Thank you dsm, for stopping by and I understand what you feel and say.

It is really difficult to teach older people a new language
but I believe that the official language of a country is the one that is spoken in school.....

I think the bi lingual program is harming the kids
when I got here i did not speak one word of english. If I were given the bi lingual program I would not have excelled in english within six months. When anybody is in the U.S. they should learn ONLY english. If they want to learn another language they should go to the country that speaks that language. which is a great idea. I love learning languages, and it is a facinating experience, but to teach children in U.S. schools, in a different language is criminal for the children's sake.

Re:
CD, yes, and that is what we do.  i only explained why bilingual programs let them learn in Spanish first, so they have a structure to scaffold to.

Human nature pretty much stays the same, only the circumstances and the basics change.  My grandparents immigrated from Bohemia in 1900, to Missouri where a group of the Czech people lived and worked in the coal mines.  The family spoke Czech at home.  My grandparents never did really learn to speak English fluently.  Mom and her siblings spoke only Czech until they went to school where they were forced to become English-speaking and English-reading children.  The Czechs in that area clung together and the rest of the population there were pretty angry and vocal about it and called the Czech area The Dogtown Bunch.  They meant it in a derogatory way, but the Czech people took pride in it and stood together and were over-comers and extremely patriotic.

I live in an area that is prominently Hispanic and work in a store that more than half the customers seem not to understand English, but in some cases its a cop out not to have to listen to our sales pitch.  When my kids were in school parents would claim they didn't speech English to get out of helping  with PTA, but I bet if you told them they won a million dollars they would learn English real fast.  My daughters ex boyfriends mom comes right out and says she doesn't want to learn English, but all three of her kids speak beautiful English.  I could go on and on.

But is the "goal" to get them to read and speak English?   Wouldn't that be of benefit to these children?
