It is amazing what those folks will attempt to overcome for the promise of sub par wages! All though laced with comical parts it is still poignant nonetheless. sam

By golly and here I thought you were just a musician that could write like the devil, and I find out you're really a professor in musicians garb. You are brilliant and reasonable and think just like me.
"But if we were really serious about stopping illegal immigration, we would apply truly draconian penalties to those who hire these people – the giant farm conglomerates, the slaughterhouses, the Washington lobbyists and garden -variety nouveau riche socialites who want house servants for free."
Brilliant and true, like AMERICA.

As everyone knows I have very little...actually no patience with illegal
migrants. we worked and paid so hard before I was accepted here ...and I always kept myself above the radar....I agree so much with every word you have written....I have nothing more to add.

Indeed! A voice of reason and rational thought
rather than hyperextended emotional kneejerkin'!
Answers to complex problems are never truly simple, binary, polarized matters. No answer will make everyone happy. The happiness/gratification wave flows and fluxes over the general population, some days favoring one patch, some days another. The big picture is about maintaining a state of balance. Which we rarely if ever feel we have achieved, or even can.

Very interesting, strat. You've been doing some thinking.
It's easy for people to complain and disagree. It's not so easy to get things going in the right direction.

This is always seen as ALL good, or ALL bad, and never as SOME of each!
Strat,
How refreshing to hear a voice of reason, in this unreasonable situation. Many of those who work here illegally, live lives as invisibly as is possible. They pay taxes and FICA witholding money into ficticious accounts, that will never benefit them or their families, but are paid to our government, with each paycheck.
Culturally, much of the tension over the influx of large hispanic families, crossing our border illegally, stems from what our citizens assume their presence here, is costing us. A true understanding of costs versus benefits to our country, might ease a lot of the resentment many of us feel. I wonder how the situation would look to us, if our situations were reversed.
If for instance, US citizens (We're ALL American's) learned of the discovery of a massive new gold strike in remote Mexican border territory, that was being kept exclusively for Mexican workers to exploit for the benefit of Mexico and it's citizens, millions of us would be screaming bloody murder over being excluded from the bonanza. US citizens would flood across the border to steal from Mexico, and "the law be DAMNED!" Looks a bit different if the shoe is put on the other foot, doesn't it?
