Africa was deemed “The Dark Continent” (most likely used in print for the first time by US journalist and explorer Henry Stanley – of “Dr. Livingstone I presume?” fame – in his Africa account “Through the Dark Continent”) due to the fact that it remained a mystery to Europeans for so long.  In many ways, it remains a mystery.  It is a place that I have never been, and probably will never go other than in books and movies and photographs.

I was disappointed when I read that it was not open to the public, and then further on, it was closed completely! What a shame for there has to be wonderful pictorial documentation with the estimated number of photos in the collection! sam
