Except for a few houseplants on the deck, I'm letting son decide what to put where and with whom, since he has all the room for gardening.  I make a request now and then for something he hasn't grown before and he jumps right to it.

Pat

I like begonias, and I like tomatoes. We'll have begonias again, as we usually do, but I gave up on tomatoes a few years ago.

I used to plant a few varieties close to the wall on the south side of the house, where they got plenty of sun. (These tomatoes were the only thing I planted and looked after - the rest of the garden is my LSW's domain, LOL.)

But then new neighbours moved in next door, who had two very nice dogs, Malamuts. And the neighbours, who were also quite nice, actually, turned the area between our two houses on their side of the fence into a kind of outdoor kennel.

And that's were the dogs did what dogs do, and even though my neighbours tried very hard to keep things clean, they never quite succeeded. Which was a delight to these big, greenish flies you sometimes see feasting on excrement, and so they did. And in summer, after having feasted, they would sun themselves on my plump, red, sun-ripening tomatoes - and while I always could and did wash them, no amount of washing could remove the memory of seeing these flies napping on my tomatoes - and I gave up on them.

Those neigbours and their dogs are gone, the new owners have no dogs, and my dog knows better than to go beyond peeing at the pee-tree, but I'm out of practice...

The moral of the story? For me, flies are a danger to tomatoes, but whether begonias are I don't know...

I've not had much luck the past 2 years with 'maters' but, I'm going to try again --- I have a new plot to consider with more sun (and away from the one I had chosen and the snakes invaded --- ewwww) - I have kept my begonias on the patio more this year due to the heat here in the summer.  Elyse

Is it dangerous
I think potatoes and tomatoes are a bad mix Pat. I grow straws and toms in the same greenhouse in separate pots. I am afraid the seasons here are not kind to outdoor growing of toms as they succumb to blight in most seasons as do potatoes sometimes. Strawberries do not like damp conditions as they are subject to botrytis (a mould on the berries) but of course the plants like lashings of water when fruiting. Like all things it is trial and error that provides the answer.
