There are lots of very interesting options for lodging...

Bed and Breakfast is a very different thing in England, for instance, where it is low cost and all about people welcoming strangers and meeting people rather than luxurious romantic get-aways at a premium price.

You can also stay in monasteries in some places.  I nearly did that a few years ago, on my trip to Italy, but never figured out quite how to arrange it.  It would have helped to speak Italian.  Would have helped even more to have found a travel-mentor in that area.

Glad the postcard arrived, TAPS!
One of the curious features of the San Diego USA hostel is that it's located in a former brothel.  Ideal arrangement:a small common area, a knook in which to do business, a kitchen... and lots of small rooms...

I've learned something new.  My teenage son stayed in hostels throughout Europe, but I never considered them an adult budget travel option before.  You've changed my mind!  Mal

Ciel, I've never stayed in a hostel and I find your posts about them to be very fun to read.  You do and write the most interesting things.  And of course, you know I love your photographs.  Thanks ever so much for the post card.

Re: Wow. Are there companies who run these, or what?
Yes, in fact there are companies and organizations... the largest is probably International Youth Hostels, and they, last time I checked, have a lot of rules.  Some are privately operated, I'm sure, and pretty funky--as in functional and perhaps a bit... too much like a college-kid communal house-- having not the support of a professional-minded organization behind them.

I looked into these for my daughter's senior girl scout troop to make a trip to Monterey CA. When the girls heard about the limitations, they all decidede they would take their monewy and go to the local mall instead.
