There's a saying that we get the government we deserve
What we get is a reflection of ourselves.  Thanks Naut for your post and response. The silent majority they may be, in whatever country they are in, be they moderate Muslims, or whomever they may be, But they are their own force, who have played their part in modern society.  It may not be expressed or even understood cohesively but it's here where the majority is located, but within that there are as many differences as people. If sufficient numbers of people share a high degree of concern, and are moved by the call, they will gather, and rise to the fight. A boil cannot keep growing without something giving. People assess for themselves, the impact of events, circumstances, and leaders on themselves, and assess the risks they will take accordingly. Not only that, they can only fight and oppose the things that concern and rile them. If the boil is not crippling them with pain, they won;t act.

Simply put, we can't ask or expect others to fight what riles us.

I will just add, that in mentioning villagers from non-Western countries, I am not intending to imply any less awareness or understanding of the world and how life ought to be lived. There is plenty of urban ignorance.  I recall Turkish villagers for example leading simple but purposeful lives, that gave me cause to question the complexities of my own life.

I think that perhaps we are being a tad too severe with those Muslim moderates... I know those terrorists are horrible and any reasonable human being should rise up against them...  but if we are to be fair, we have to consider that as  moderates from all religions, what makes them "moderate" in the first place,( the fact that  they do not go for extremes, that they are quiet and invisible, ) works against what we expect them to do: voice their opposition to the terrorists. If they were to assert their positions they would cease to be "moderate" and become militant...  Yes, it would be great if they were to denounce what is going on... but realistically that is not likely to happen... I think their psychological make up does not make it easy for  them to take a position that "visible"  ... and its not because they are Muslims...even though I totally agree with  you about the pathological aspects of their religion.  There are many examples of other "silent" groups which though greater in number than their loud comrades are never heard and thus rarely influence the course of their destiny.  Right here in the US we have the famous silent majority that once or twice has spoken and elected presidents... so its apparent that it can happen,  but it is quite unlikely to.  In my opinion we should look for other avenues to solve our problems because though it would be great if they did,   those "moderates" are not likely to come out denouncing anything anytime soon unless the gentle probing they are experimenting becomes  strong pushing and shoving.   Be well.  xoxoxoxo

I definitely believe the moderates can rise up as well. Can there be a unified front in the Islamic world? No, but I that within towns and countries it would be possible to have that change from within.
