That is positive and very caring of a person to do that, they are paying attention to what you have to say.

I would rather arouse the ire of a friend for a few days
I can live with that. But I can't live with saying something's perfect or brilliant when it's not. I want my friends

to live up to all that they can be.

I would never have the audacity to offer criticism on someone's writing. I do know what I like, and will comment on it, but don't consider myself knowledgeable enough to dare give pointers. I think your writing rocks!

That is why TomUgly has hit a wall and I need help.An honest friend told me
that introducing Tom's cousin Will late in the book was just too contrived......so I am rewritting the whole thing with him there from the beginning. So it adds another year to the book...doesn't really matter. Keep working ...I am a fan anyway.

Yes, writer-editor friends like this are not only rare but priceless.  I have--2--and count myself super-lucky.  The thing is, they have eagle eyes, but see from two aspects.  I get to 'balance' between these viewpoints, and am as you said it well, grateful as heck when my 'coasting downhill' is pointed out.  I know they have my best interests at heart; in defense of those who complimented your work--maybe it was good and better than most--and they did not know you well enough to realize that you did want the hard truth.  Also, it takes discretion to know what is 'good' and what 'could be improved, tightened, cut . . .' and so on.  And energy.  However now that I know you want the real deal, I'll be more serious.
