Tough situation--if the group is like a workshop where editing is suggested to the writer. If you have to say something, it's possible to pick some element you did like (if you're saintly) and a very specific comment or suggestion about a very specific phrase. He might get a hint--nah.

I don't know Maupassant's work well, but I liked what I have read. This new man in your circle strikes me as sad, more than 'hollow', maybe a bit like Maupassant himself, whose life certainly ended sadly...
