They get along famously with the kids -
until the kids step into the middle of an abusive situation. I've heard this maxim that I just stated so often I can't remember how many times it's been publicized. The kids are just wonderful until the abuser starts a battering session, then the kids step in in Mom's or Dad's defense (depends on who's being abused) and the abuser starts in on the kids for interfering with the abuser.

They, too, are described as getting along fabulously with kids.
