Bunny:
Yay! Great post - I'm still confused about that Jell-O commercial, too...How do these people get hired as writers, I wonder?
And I'm way impressed that you knew about Mithras!
It was certainly a smart move on Christianity's part to appropriate various popular pagan holidays into the religion. Easter anyone? Interesting that in honor of Christ's resurrection a bunny near the beginning of the spring brings us chocolate eggs...(erm, fertility anyone?)
Anyway, back to your post - Jacko gives me the ick vibe, too. Jacko and Jello combined in one post...I've got goosebumps!!

We're celebrating the birth of Jesus
at this time of year, because the Powers That Be decided to provide the
hoi polloi with an alternative to the other religious celebrations going on at the time. This is rather like the TV programmers putting blockbuster movies on opposite one another, or airing
Lord of the Rings opposite the Super Bowl.
More on the holidays here.

You're right Shawn...
Jesus wasn't born in the Winter. The bible gives all kinds of clues to the time of year and many biblical scholars have written on that subject. Bummer, I was going to write a blog about that in a few days, but wanted to borrow a couple of books from my Dad first. Oh well, maybe I still will.

Mithras is the reason for the season!
He really was born near the winter solstice. And way back when, he was more popular.

Well Said
...I remember Jackson's "PYT." Remember that? I liked that song! Now he's a noseless white guy with a mind that has been....well, turned to Jell-o. Sad.
I enjoy listening to the hucksters this time of season, as they butcher the English language and throw in as many psycho-mind-bending brainwashing techniques into their desperate commercials.
Oh...by the way: Jesus is not the reason for the season. Sorry. If we actually celebrated his actual birth, we'd be killing trees in late March, not late December. Sorry, Inkling.

funny, bunny
As for the holiday commercialism, I can only guess that advertisers have forgotten that Jesus is the reason for the season. I had to say that
