With someone with your kind of energy and enthusiasm, you'll see that you'll adjust to the new surroundings in no time and start enjoying it too, hard work notwithstanding. All the very best.

Re:
mariposa75, me too, unafraid in Mexico. Certain towns and borders are bad, but America has its "don't go there" places, too.
I do love Sonora and it's wonderful warm, similar to my Arizona temperatures. However, I am surely more attracted to the artesanias of the more central and southern areas.
I like using the lavadero, too, in warm weather, but on cold windy days, on the roof, and clothes not drying in the cold, I don't like that. Patzcuaro is much colder. Bummer.
Thanks for reading and writing. Hermosillo is like Tucson, only prettier. All of Sonora is like that.

Re:
Surely will vogue. Google Patzcuaro. I joined an expat yahoo group and will begin to pelt them with questions soon. Population is 70,000 and it is an old magical Spanish colonial town, hundreds of years old.
They have a Century 21 there and a Remax, google them and see the houses' prices, amazing what you get for so very very little. New construction or in historic areas. I wanted to buy a hotel, HA!, 11 rooms or so. What fun that would be, maybe. But, probably not, not my style, private solitary artist type.

Re: Sounds so great ... simplifying life ...
It is less expensive, Temple, however, I will be going down there with little money and tho' all is cheaper, my semi-gringa lifestyle will put in a more expensive bracket. I will have a car, a foreign car, and if things go wrong, it will cost more. I will have three dogs and Mexico is harder on dogs, tho' they have more fun with their more freedom. Vets bills.
My SS ck will be only $230 for retiring on. HA So, gotta babysit housees or walk dogs or translate or tour guide or youth hostel or something more, plus my artwork, will need to buy supplies. Recycling, here I come. Greener art.

Rockingrector_retd, I find that people, everywhere I go, are lovely. The world is full of mostly 99% lovely people and it should be an Interesting Adventure, dunno about terrific, but I'm hopeful.
I dreamed of quilts last night. Large quilts with Mexican dancers, etc. on them, done in their native cloths and clothing from different villages. Hmmmmmmmmmm......I am already imagining products and am not even there.

Re: yup, magic_moon, financially able is the key, no?
I will get about $230 a month in Social Security checks, HA, and that will be my base. I heard of a little Indian village house for $30 a month, with no running water. HA, too old for that tho'.

I never felt afraid being in Mexico. I think now, though, the borders are more dangerous. It seems you are in the USA and moving to Mexico maybe? My family is in Sonora (most of them) now, where it is warm. I liked washing clothes by hand in my lavadero, and hanging them on the line. (It's a lot of work, but your clothes sure get clean)

It sounds so great this new enterprise, I have half a mind to join you. If I could sell my condo in Miami now, without taking a huge loss as I would if I sold today, I might seriously think about another home there. Mexico has always attracted me. Keep us posted as on progress.

If it's less expensive, why would you have to work four jobs? You'd think because you speak English (and Spanish, yes?) you could do so many things. I'm excited for you! xo

Cool, WileyJohn, help with repairs or just sit in the plaza and people watch or watch Kabu shop till she drops, all from one location. I will guide and protect you, hehehehehhhh.
We could sip hot chocolate and look at the stars and watch some Mexican holidays' celebrations, there always are one or two every day, usually, within a few miles of each little town.
Patzcuaro is famous for its dance of the Viejitos, the little old men, just our kinda dance, I'm thinking. Kabu and I will Start the New Dance of the Viejitas, little old ladies. HA ~!!!

What an exciting change to be making. I can even see me doing something like that, or trying to. It would be good for me to have to once again eke out a living in an exciting place of mangoes and guavas and avocados, Mariachi music and dancing. I would not be afraid to live there.

Re: benzinha
WileyJohn, there are hundreds of thousands of Canadians living in Mexico, happily and safely.
Anyone who deals drugs anywhere is asking for death, I fear.
Mexico has 16% of our crime, less than 20% of what we have. Theirs is reported as though it were worse than America's but it just ain't so. Ciudad Juarez now, that place is truly screwed, but I am not going there to live and I am not even driving through there. I am going to a quiet Indian town.
There are over 3 million Americans retired down in Mexico already and they feel entirely at ease. They expect that number to rise to 6 million in the near future. The people are not fools, nor in major danger.
Gringos and Canadians all live like kings on their American SS checks and Canadian retirement fees.... They have full time maids for $30 a week and gardeners and cooks, etc. and their med bills are minimal. Yearly insurance for elders down there is $249 a year, making an emergency room visit about $20 dollars.......I told you that I found a modern house in a Canadian and American neighborhood in Patzcuaro with 4 bedrooms and 5 baths, lovely place, for $365 a month rent ?!?!?!?
Mexicans, on the other hand, make $10 a day, if that, many hustle hard and get $3 a day, maybe..........when $10 a day is being paid well. So, that is why they come up here where they can earn a minimum salary of $6.50 an hour, I believe. See that big difference in pay???
No, Mexico is actually much safer than here and the people down there are kinder and gentler and friendlier and more neighborly than people here in this country. I swear. And, we used to be pretty darned friendly people, before 9/11.

Well, it makes me apprehensive for you, but Mexico is scary to me as a Canadian because so many Canadians have been murdered there in the past couple of years. All to do with the drug trade I suppose but it wouldn't be a travel choice of mine just because of that. Then I ask the question, why so many Mexicans can't find work in the country and live illegally in the U.S.A.? Now here's a friend of mine going to live there so you are one gutsy lady, used to the culture obviously. Vaya con dios
