Quite an eye-opening perspective, there.  The trouble with taxes is how many are deemed necessary behind closed doors.  It's all in those hidden charges when the bill comes due.  But what's the alternative?  Anarchy?  What happens then when disaster strikes?  Who pays that bill? No infrastructure = no safety net, unless somebody has a bright idea how to make it work sans slavery, er, I mean taxes.

It would seem the truth (read:answer) is somewhere in the middle, but I'm not holding my breath for the middle ground to manifest.

Anyway, great poem, great post.  And scary.

All too true. I had other people read this post, as well. We're all doing a lot of thinking over here. Nice work.

Government will NEVER take it's hand outa our pockets!
Naut,
I have always agreed with the philosophy that proclaims, "The best governed people, are the LEAST governed people." I'm no anarchist, but if the only choices are the kind of corrupt government that appears to be the evolutional end of the road, and anarchy,........Well, I don't know which choice is worse!
Isn't it interesting that no place on Earth does not belong to some country, there is not one square-foot of soil that belongs to nobody, no country, where if whichever government that will inevitably claim this hypothetical one square-foot size island, notifys you that, "You owe this much (fill in blank) tax. Pay me, or we will lock you up, or confiscate all your belongings, then give you a fair trial, and then convict you, the penalty for which crime may range anywhere between imprisonment, at hard labor, to execution, or all of the above, our decision. Pay or pray!" Nobody can tell their government "No!" and get away with it, without their permission. We are all owned by our governments, whether we realize it or not.

Ah the good of days when women could be hang for wearing pants, when women did not have the right to vote or work, when if they (women) work, their salary went straight to their husband (they were not allowed to write check either), when half the kids died before the age of 2 (doctors cost too much, and still does in USA), when the only ones who could go to school were the rich, and the small poor kids (6 and higher) worked in factories 14-16 hours per day, when the boss could fire you because you were black, a woman, a jew or a muslim...yah, the good old days...Funny but some how, I prefer NOW!

"When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion — when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing - when you see money flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors - when you see that men get richer by graft and pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you - when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice - you may know that your society is doomed." Yep - we not only elect them, we pay them to tax us.

The good news is that the taxman is human and pliable!

It's mind boggling as to how many taxes we pay, that's for sure. I don't see it ever changing. Too many accountants, tax lawyers and in my nation's case a big IRS.
