- Go to Obama: A Year Later, and Much More…Part IX
On this particular inssue, specifically on the attack at Ft. Hood,
it's crystal clear that people trained to recognize an enemy overlooked what was clearly demonstrated not just once but several times. What part of "I want to kill you" didn't they understand? I just wish I were wise enough to have some clue about how to stop the mutually assured destruction that looms larger every day.

I hate to see you stop here. We kind of need an on-going commentator on this subject and you fit the bill as far as I'm concerned.

I'm a firm believer of moderation, rational thought & civility.
I also believe that millions of people in today's diverse world share that view, regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity etc. Therein lies the challenge of pulling the world's rational thinkers / moderates together for a common good, despite solitary examples to the contrary.

Naut
As you know I’ve been away but I spent some time this morning doing some “catch-up” reading. You put a great deal of effort into this series (which comes as no surprise given some of your past submissions) and it gave me much food for thought. You invoked some articulate comments as well… well done!

With regard to non-extremist Muslims.
IMO only by appealing to moderate/mainstream/non-extremeist Muslims is there any hope of winning this battle.
One way of getting this support is by showing cultural sensitivity. Many of my neighbours just happen to be well-integrated Muslims and we live peacefully side by side. During the famous cartoon crises I talked to some of them about how they felt about it. They were angry and very hurt. Now although I am in favour of free speech, freedom of the press and all our other precious civil rights, I do think that in this case unbridled adherence to them was counter-productive.
Nautikos, one reason why I admire President Obama is his cultural sensitivity; I cannot imagine him using provocative terms such as 'crusade'.
P.S. I'm glad that you Israel's friend; however good friends are also entitled to be critical once in a while. Israel is a democratic country where people are not frightened of voicing their opinions which range from extreme right to extreme left.
Thank you for spending so much time and effort on these posts. I've found them very interesting, even though I'm not a 100% in agreement with you.

Naut......
There's little "hope" for a solution from this administration. Considering they now label Islamo- Fascist Terrorism as "man-caused disasters" A new medical procedure will have to evolve.....until there is a way to successfully transplant a set of "cajones"......we are more likely headed down a path toward capitulation and appeasement......

Excellent read.
No doubt you are now waiting to hear what Obama has planned with regard to Afghanistan.

Nautikos
We all ought to get the hell out of there and guard our own countries against any sect or religion that makes women the slaves of men, and makes all non-Muslims infidels, just deport the entire culture.
Now as far as I'm concerned if all Muslims can't handle this problem themselves then all Muslims don't see it as a problem so why should we?
And as far as you being pro-Israel, I'm all for fair play, and the countryless Palestinians need to get a fair shake along with the Israelis.

anyone who thinks the so called moderate muslim will do something
anything, about the so called extreme muslim, does not know how the muslim world works. Being married to a muslim man :( I know that nothing will ever happen, from the so called moderate muslims, they have still been bred to hate jews, and not trust infidels, and when it comes down to it, they do have that hate.) the only hope the world has is educating the new generation, planting a seed in the next muslim generation and putting our people in key power positions in the muslim world. Otherwise, its just going to get worse and bigger and USA will be like Israel "under daily attack"
The Obama administration will not even admit that we have a problem much less do anything about it.

Naut, what can those of us who...
would like to see something close to world-peace, at least in our children's lifetimes, do to pursuade / convince moderate / mainstream muslims that it is in their children's interest as well that they actively join us in helping to eradicate this menace?
And Naut, fiercely independent as you are my friend :), copping out of this series at this point is not an option now. You started it, now you lead/moderate/facilitate the ensuing discussions...after all, I was just getting ready :)!!
Have a great Thanksgiving! - Ash

I am frightened about this whole thing, too! The talk at the campaign has not come close! In fact, my young soldier son is going to be in Afghanistan a year earlier, now! I would be a little more at ease if there were more of a direction but I fear it has become another battle, a conflict without a resolution and will probably continue into the next administration! How about not making this the end. I have been enjoying tossing thoughts
around here and am more and more convinced that we should be supportive of India and let the AFGHANS and Pakistani work out their tribal problems. People that only want money support have to be kidding.
