All I can tell you is what I found in Encarta, there is a lot of info there if you can get Encarta, if not I could copy and e-mail it all to you if you'd like.

"Loom, machine used in weaving fabrics from yarn or other fibers. A woven fabric produced on a loom is made by interlacing two sets of threads at right angles. The longitudinal threads are called the warp, and the transverse threads are called filling in the United States and weft in the United Kingdom and British Commonwealth countries (see Textiles).
