My sis-in-laws call that 'brain candy'...magazines, etc. to pass the time without having to think too hard about anything. I like Women's World myself, that cheap little magazine for like, $1.39 at the grocery store....not too much pondering needed for that one...it's relaxing.

Loved this post!
My cousin used to lock herself in the bathroom whenever she needed a break from her two little kids (she lost her husbnad at the age of 25 so you can imgine her need for peace and quite). I find the loo to be the best place to escape it all at work, home and any stressful situation hence all thought-provoking material is not welcome at the WC!

I believe in privacy, no matter how you have to get it. For some of us mothers, that is the only place the kiddies prefer not to follow us into. Sweet freedom!

I'm on my way... Always used to read in the loo as a child, since it was the only possible place of privacy in the entire house.

I'd like to know more about child-rearing, too....my children tell me I'm not so hot at it...! Thank you for reading, and for your comments!

....Hopefully you had an alternate bathroom, then, growing up? If theirs was occupied for longer than just the ...usual...amount of time.....Thanks for reading, FSI.

That's what others say, "Good Grief! Just do your thing and GET OUT!" I live with one of those so I understand somewhat. What's good for one is not good for all...we can still be friends, though!

Im glad to see you are not one of those tongue-in-cheek writers. Good reportage is about the facts, so I really liked this article becuse it is very informative. Would like to know more about child-rearing because I don't have any offspring myself, but I'm really into self-help books.

I really enjoyed the post, but I have nothing in my bathroom to read.  I don't spend enough time in there to get interested in anything.

...Hmmmm....I actually didn't know that....a long and distinguished tradition, eh? It seems to me that the 'upper crust' tend to use the loo for these purposes...very, very interesting...I do feel distinguished, come to think of it....

So many of us have so much in common on this site. I am always amazed
when I find how many human behavior are international.

Bathroom Readers...

When I was very young, our bathroom reader was the SEARS AND ROEBUCK CATALOGUE;

it served multiple purposes in the outdoor privvy.  joab

I am on my way over to your house! And am I even so pleased to find another avid loo-reader. As far as my parents are concerned, it was my Dad who disappeared into the gents for hours on end. He liked to read stuff like Hegel and Kant there and to smoke at the same time. He was truly multitasking as he wasn't allowed to smoke anywhere else. And, I'm sure you know, that Socrates used to lecture his pupils in the public baths. So, it's a room with a long and distinguished tradition.

I'm not a bathroom reader
probably because I am a big reader in general, which I get from my mother - neither one of us can fit TV into our busy reading schedules...  I'd never thought of using bathroom time though

Doesn't everybody read in the WC?   Even when we are 'desperate' Ell and I have to grab the current novel before rushing to the loo.

Intresting comments

I should admit, i too share a similar habit which i picked up from my dad. Thanks to mum, i had to quit the same.

Yet when i am home i find a new bunch of books , right on the top and indulge in them.

 :)

Somehow, I've never been able to read in the bathroom. But I wish I had cultivated this habit!

My grandson aged three insists on TinTin. The only trouble with turning bathrooms into libraries, is that if somebody gets hold of a really good book, it's tough on the rest of the family; unless of course you've got more than one bathroom.

Thanks for your visit and feedback.

Hmmmm....!...I haven't thought of writing.... seems like the natural next step, though!...perhaps you've given me a new activity to try. It's almost like a severe fetish or something...I often can't use the 'jane' without something to read now. I've been known to go through texts on my cell phone, or read the back of a shampoo bottle just to get through the visit.... Must have something....anything....to read! And twenty minutes? Heck, if the book's really good, I can stay there so long my legs fall asleep....

So I am not alone!!!!!!!
It's funny because when my son's father and I were together he thought it was weird because I would both read or write. Depending on my mood. Our son since he was potty trained has always taken a book with him and will actually send a good twenty minutes in there. When I check on him he tells me "Mama I am having my alone time." So do we like start a club or what??? LMAO! BTW that was well written. Better than most magazine articles I have read.

Darson, I'll be right ovver, but I doubt I can read an entire novel all in
one "sitting"...my sister in London always has a vast number of Readers Digests available.....
