We have certainly overstayed our welcome
Personally, I have felt the revenge mission against bin Laden was a fruitless exercise. It was pure folly to declare war on terrorism. It is a chimera.
What made some sense was to depose some of the tyrannical regimes which encouraged the thuggish behavior and racist beliefs of two-bit gang leaders like bin Laden. Problem was, we didn't know when to leave so we could move on to some of the other tyrants for whose fall we could have garnered greater international support, like Syria and Iran, and we didn't have the guts to declare Saudi Arabia a pariah for its brutally bigoted laws.
Now we have the Taliban back. What's next, the return to power of the Baath party in Iraq?
