Go to Life in the Rocking Rectory

That's a tough one. Some religions believe that to keep an animal captive when it wants to be free is cruelty. But it seems equally cruel to set one free when it is used to some modicum of human care. We once adopted a stray who had impregnated our female. We named him "Romeo". He only lived a couple of weeks, I think because he was born to be wild! So we learned not to be too quick to "rescue" an animal. I see you've written another post continuing this tale...

I'm coming late to this conversation, but maybe this will help...
some cats belong to places, but most I have known belong to people.
I would go back and call the cat however you used to, and when he comes to you, if he does, take him home with you. If he is in fact a people cat, and you are his people, he is missing you.
If you simply can't keep him in your new digs, maybe then the solution is to take him to someone who can take him, and have them keep him in the house perhaps in one room, like a bathroom, for a week or so until he begins to realize that this new place is home.
Good luck to you and Cat!

Retired
We had a somewhat feral cat once (which does make “moving” it to a new location a challenge). We found a farm though that took it in (or out, as the case may be). Once they are accustomed to the outdoors it’s difficult to relocate them but a new rural setting would probably be the best solution.

How unfortunate! I have no clue in this dilemma, either! Best wishes, though! sam

Hmmmm. Sounds like a bit of a problem. There are feral cats in the woods around here. Often they come to the complex dumpsters at night searching for food.

a similar situation
We took a cat that had been running wild and was hard to catch. I had an extra large dog kennel, so we put a cat box in it and put it on our back porch. My children are old enough and motivated to keep the cat--so they cleaned up the mess she made daily, until the cat herself got tired of the mess and became exceptionally good about using the box. She tamed up nicely, and now we let her out on the back porch, and are about to give her the run of our back yard.

My sympathies go out to you and the cat, but apart from that I cannot give you any advice. Here's hoping that somebody else can help you on this one.
