The thing about pot and schizophrenia, Globug--

It is highly unlikely that pot alone sent that young man into schizophrenia, though it may have helped disconnect him from reality.  Pot doesn't actually work that way, nor does schizophrenia.  Genes have a lot to do with it, however.

Pot, like any medication, if taken indiscriminately, is likely to do more harm than good, and contrariwise, taken in proper dosage and balance with other factors, has great potential to, as you say, heal and improve quality of life.

The same can be said of sugar.

regretable
It's very sad that happened to that young man.  But, as with everything on this planet, every individual Is uniquely & wonderfully created & no single factor works the same for 100% of individuals.  Conversly, I know of several people that have greatly improved their quality of life & functionality by using medical marijuana.  I believe it's a mystery as to all the ways the Creator "Uses the foolish things to confound the wise."  Industrial Hemp is a horse of a different color.  Does it make me wise or confounded?  Makes one go hmmmm???

It is so sad. The son of a friend of mine started pot in his teens, but now in his twenties is schizophrenic and will never live an independent life. Perhaps pot shouldn't be legalised if it can do that to young people.

As always, you are thoughtful and thought-provoking, and I think your insight here is absolutely correct. Whatever minimal contact I've had with a scene that used to be pretty familiar at one time suggests that there is a cramped cheerlessness about it these days, and you're also certainly right about the grunginess of it all.

And what research I have looked at over the last few years, though without being able to quote anything right now, it appears that pot is far more damaging than was once assumed, which makes for a pretty good argument against legalization...

This is such a well thought out post and you present a pretty impressive
argument. I think of Woodstock and realize how many from there are dead and I nursed so many wasted lives in hospitals. I love your analogy with the wild flowers like an untended, weedy, half dead, drought and pest infested patch. Yes the flower children cultis long gone along with its unreachable hopes for peace ......make peace not war....but he shot John Lennon anyway.
