I think it's a great place to be - retirement. You get to do anything and everything that you want and enjoy life to the fullest. Love begets love and I think you have shown them that part of yourself and hence that wonderful farewell! Have a wonderful start to retirement.

Que sais-je *
What do I know?
Nothing.
I sit in the late summer sun,
Things do what they’ve always done,
Cicadas buzz in rippling waves,
A spider’s web blows mightily, like a sail,
Between the branches of a conifer.
Blowing seeds randomly fall.
Lighting an aspect of a tree
Through sunbeams warming me.
I sit on the edge
Of the shade, near a ledge:
A protuberance of bricks
Carefully spaced
Each and everyone in their place.
A squirrel drops from a tree
Then hops around,
Searching on the ground.
Do I need to know,
Want to know,
The meaning of all this?
All that’s been said,
Is speculation
Helped along by imagination
Using ratiocination.
Look! A pretty dandelion -
Floating, floating
And there’s a weed
Madly waving at me:
Look at me! Look at me!
Give a man a hammer
And he’ll hammer nails:
Bam…Bam…Bam…Bam……Bam!
Why does it always go in fives?
And the last Bam
Sends a note of satisfaction
To the ears, while the eyes
Look at the sunken nail.
That’s what the vibrations in the air
Carry to my eye and ear.
A seed falls on my book
The cicadas saw has changed
A breeze blows in
What does it mean?
Does it matter whether it rains or shines?
Why do minds
Question so?
Is that the way to go?
When I look at history,
Yes, it always has been so.
Meanwhile the cicadas sing ~
The wind blows through the pine needles,
The crows caw and cackle;
Cars glide aimlessly about.
The scene alive and static
Is just the place for a picnic.
Did I hear a little thought
That said,
Life is what you make it.
Yes?
Well, what can I make of a sickness bed?
I address the air, with a prayer -
And the cicadas sing
The red roses make a ring,
The clouds come and go
The hammer falls,
And the squirrel squalls.
And the answer to my questions?
All that?
A silent Be-ing
Tells the truth
But the unprepared mind
Cannot know,
That this is all,
On which we have to go.
And perhaps,
That I don’t know,
Is better so?
Yes, better so.

Loss, I suspect is an illusion--convincing for a while, but--
all that you valued will still be within reach, including regular chats with Nigel.

Retired
Sounds like a marvelous day!  It's been interesting reading about your journey into retirement and it will be equally enjoyable, I'm sure, reading about the simple life you and Ed will create.

I like your new name.  There's quite a bit of imagery in that alone.  What a fine time your people gave you at the ending of your Rector career.  They must have loved you a lot.

Congratulations to you both on your retirement. I hope that it will be just as enjoyable and enriching as your working life.
