Most likely it was decdied that it would look best for Sergeant Crowley and Professor Gates to come down the stair together, which meant that Crowley was the one that would be next to him when he needed that help.  If Obama was walking with Gates, that would have gone against the whole point of the meeting.

Allowing Crowley the chance to help gates down the stairs makes a lot of sense in bigger picture here and has a symbolism to it that would not have been there if Obama was the one helping him.  But you obviously don't care about the bigger picture and the potential that such a symbolic image has. You wish to take all the positive, beneficial effects of such a meeting and twist them around to try and make it into something negative.

Bush never admitted he was wrong when he said or did something stupid and poorly thought out. All people make mistakes in their judgement at some point and make rash statements,  Bush did this, but he was never enough of a leader to admit it and make amends.  Instead he back tracked and tried to pretend he had said something different or that what he said didn't mean what it meant.

Oh, we was a very capable leader, all right . . .

Especially as he led the way out the meeting, striding unconcernedly ahead and leaving Sergeant Crowley, towards whom he had previously demonstrated his leadership by branding his actions as stupid, to help the aged and infirm Professor Gates down the steps.

In my mind, Sergeant Crowley emerged as the leader. Obama was self-centered and insensitive to the needs of his purported friend.

Guys, guys, guys....c'mon now...
Keep personalizing your attacks, particularly based on race / religion, and this country / world will never experience peaceful & wholesome relations between diverse people. I thought the significance of that meeting was to allow diverse people to express their views without having to apologize, but at the end of the day make it a productive dilaogue that helps move our country / world forward, instead of getting stuck in biases. I challenge you guys to even attempt that here. And for that matter, let's make it free for all, in the sense that anyone that cares to comment can do so, provided our sincere goal remains mutual understanding & respect. Whenever you are ready, gentlemen, let's roll........

Corbin, RSM
You two voted for Bush and have defended Bush.  It is clear you have no idea at all what good leadership is all about.

Just look at your comments here.  You have NOTHING of value in them.  Obama showed himself to be a far better man and leader than Bush and all you can do is act childish in response to it and make the same kind of meaningless personal attacks against Obama you do against me.

And I love how you two go off on anyone defending Obama, yet I've yet to see anyone worship or blindly praise Obama at the level you two worshiped and blindly praised Bush.  My guess it that you two believed that every time Bush went to the can he it was of great, world changing significant, showing just how great of a leader he was and if Obama pauses so he doesn't step on a bug he is being an elitist and giving into the bugs, who need to be destroyed for the betterment of mankind.  I didn't look for reason to go after Bush and I don't look for reasons to praise Obama. But then again I judge people on their actions, not on their political affiliations.

Re: Re: I agree...
RSM....he was even drinking "Sissy" near beer!   Probably afraid of how it would loosen his tongue up....and being without the teleprompter.....and Joe Biden on his left......well there could have been all kinds of loose lips flapping about!

He would have started speaking quotes from his books revealing his thoughts about "whitey"..........ROTFLMAO!

I agree...
The ability to sit face to face and discuss divisive issues with an open mind and strong will for fair, amicable resolutions is indeed a good leadership quality. There are enough forces in the world trying to pull people apart, a unifying force is a welcome relief.
