Because I grew up partly in Europe... I never understood the racial tensions in the US . I do get everything that you are saying... and it is a shame that in this day and age... our president has to make reference to such a minor happening in a televised press conference... with all the other calamities that are happening in the world... How can our "leader" infer that police acted stupidly because they went to check out a possible break in? He could have said they were too aggressive... perhaps not sensitive enough considering it was an old man with a cane ( which by the way he threatened the police officer with loll) He could have continued as he started by saying that he was not there and really did not know what had transpired but that he felt sorry his friend had such a bad day... but to insult the men and women that day in and day out deal with the scourge of society to allow us to go to sleep at nights feeling fairly safe... that was an unbelievably terrible choice of words. On the other hand... it was a bad thing that happened at the professor 's house...It should have gone as you described it would go, it if happened to you and the fact that it didn't has to do 100% with the fact the professor was black. His being black influenced his reaction to the police entering his house and accusing him... and it colored the police view of what was happening. But, like you said, its time to grow up and go on. This is 2009 and we truly should learn that people are people wether black, white, green or even police :-) and they are going to have bad days and good days... and whining does not solve anything. If I were the judge in charge of deciding what to do in that case I would send the professor to the corner for having a potty mouth and the police to a community sensitivity class to learn to deal with all situations, pleasant or not, without trespassing on citizens' civil liberties.
