I think it's best to leave this song hanging in our minds with all its
possible different meanings.

I love this song, too! I get TAPS point of view from the video, which I posted on my music blog a little while ago, and is excellent if you haven't seen it. I don't pick up the suicide meaning either, but I suppose it could be. I grew up in a little town that most people never escape from, poor as dirt, and made my escape to make my life. I feel like the small things that I have accomplished (buying a house, publishing a book) would not have happened if I didn't say goodbye to everything I knew and make an attempt to find my own way.

I love love love this song.
I posted it on my music blog recently. I was reading about it, and actually, I guess it's about suicide, which I totally do not get from the song. I feel like sometimes we need to say goodbye to the past and all the mistakes we have made to have a second chance. We are our own worst enemies, and forgiving ourselves is the most wonderful gift we can give ourselves. xoxoxo thanks for the great post.

I guess I see it from a parent's point of view, a parent old enough to see sons go out into the world, make lives for themselves, make mistakes, suffer from their choices, learn from their mistakes, pick themselves up and try again to make something worthwhile from the pieces. A parent can only influence for so long, and then, no matter what may come, they have to let go.
