Welcome to the club! In Canada, we've had a VAT (here called a GST (General Sales Tax) for many years now, currently at the rate of 5%, which is actually down from 7%. But on top of that, each Province (with the exception of Alberta, they got oil, lol) also has a PST (Provincial Sales Tax), which in Ontario stands currently at the rate of 8%. Now, the GST is added first to whatever you buy, and the PST is charged on the resulting total! Thus, in effect you're paying taxes on taxes...
