The view / opinion of what is and is not credible tends to cover a wider space with the so-called well-educated...sort of a know-it-all tendency :)!

Troosha - it's funny the way you put it but it is also alarmingly true
Re-affirmation from their communities and those of like mind also play a big part in that type of rigid entrenchment. We need look no further than recent developments on this site to see how the firmly rigid find and support each other.

… and what about those people who are so brainwashed (for the lack of a better term) who no longer know what their “references” are nor do they look for any. They are simply so engrained in their way of thinking they no longer consider alternatives or question the truth as they know it. They settle into their narrow trench, set up a bench there, and sit in ignorant comfort.
