they do sometimes disappear

I most go with whoever leaves a comment or a calling card. I'll read them until the poster disappears.

I read my friends and the people who read me and then I go through
the categories browsing for something interesting. I seldom look at where I am on the list. I don't know how it works either.

TAPS.
I use to read the list of new blogs then everyone that I commented on were on the most popular so I continued to go that route, you miss out on the blogit wars if you dont read the comment section

Re: lustor, LOL, When I was in the top 10, I never really had a strategy
well there is something fishy to me that its the ones that have been around since at least 2004 that remain on the top and if they fall off they are back up there in a few days

I don't really have a system of reading others, that's why I miss so many or am days late in reading.  I've never really figured out a good systme.  Help.

My leader days are gone! LOL
I don't really care anymore.  I pick my favs and then pick at random.

I don’t refer to the leader board – I read people I have added to “my people” list because I enjoy their posts or I read people who are faithful readers of my poetry (such as yourself).

yes but its the well established writers that get and stay there, usually it takes a while for a newbie to reach that point.

I have got a long list of blogs that appeal to me (including yours), then I tend to go through the list and read them regularly. When people go to the trouble of reading my blog, I read their's. However I also go through the list of fresh entries and if I find a title that interests me, I read the blog. It seems to me that there's nothing weird about who gets into the top 10; they get into it because in some way or other their writing catches our interest.

yes there is something strange about the whole status thing

Returning clicks first, then go looking for my favorites and then, if I have time, I check out new ones. I don't care about most popular, as you so rightly observed it's not a true mirror of popularity or even quality.

and I am one of those that appreciate that you are always there

I like to travel around reading people I don't usually read when
I have time. If I enjoy the read, I favorite them so I am informed when they post and continue, or try to, read them somewhat regularly. My readers and commenters are important to me, so I always try to read them regularly. This does not always work, I fall behind and miss people I love to read. But normally I try my hardest to at the very least, return the click.
