Amen, Timmy!!
I will tell you this. ., I have never, ever met anyone who has turned their life over to Christ whom has not totally changed for THE BETTER.  I cannot say the same for those I know who have chosen NOT to believe in Christ.

I am at work and want to read this again before I comment on this. You have shared much about yourself here and I find it very interesting. Peace, OTA

SOmeone wiser than me said when asked what kind of proof the people would need to believe:  " To hose that do not believe no proof will ever be enough and to those who believe no proof is necessary"  Great post Timmy :-)

wonderful post. Unfortunately faith has to come from within, it can't be
academically thrashed out. Talismans do work for awhile I agree but in the long term they won't work. I know a God of love but that is my experience.

TIMMYTALES
I loved your post my friend and God Bless your wife's faith and courage and you for being with her. I'm a believer of course, I've been sober now 41 years and I can tell you that God turned me around when I asked for His help. End of story.

Holy Cow Zenmom!!!!!

LOL.....This is the reason that I do not like to respond to religious or political posts. I do not mind that you spoke your mind, but I do think that you took a few liberties here by putting words into my blog. If I gave the perception, then I apologize.

You are right of course that adversity is a part of life, and belief in any God  will not change that. Belief in God makes it bearable for those that have faith.  True religion does not act as a crutch, those that are religious use it as a crutch to help themselves stand and walk.

Again, you are right, most criminals do not change, my point here is that some do and only through religion. You said that praying is no guarantee. Again, you are correct, but I don't believe the bible or anyone who has faith will make the claim that it is a guarantee.

The priests, the television evangelists and the like are criminals that hide behind religion, it is not them nor a building that calls itself a church that I believe in.

Again, you are correct, there is no such thing as a good luck charm. It is the belief that the charm is lucky that makes it so.

Here is where the words came into my post and again, If I gave that perception then I was wrong and will try to clarify.  God is not a placebo, it is the belief in him that makes him so.

Let's talk about extraordinary claims. I have to chuckle at this because in the bible, when Jesus proclaimed himself to be the son of man and forgave sins and made the blind see, he was ridiculed. I am not sure what more proof there can be.

I do know people who have had near death experiences and claim that they saw a white light and heard the voices of angels. I also know others who claim to have seen ghosts. Does that mean that they exist? They were very real to those people so who are you or I to call them a liar?

You mentioned your MS (I am truly sorry to hear that) and talked about a feather saying that you would want proof. Yet, on a daily basis we put our faith in things that we know nothing of. Taking a medication for the first time is proof of that statement.

I want to make a guess as to your "falling out of the church" and give you more insight into my own life.

I lost my little sister to cancer, lost my father to cancer and my ex-wife followed him a couple of months later. I was angry at God, I questioned his existence, I cried out "why me?" and asked Why is this happening to me?

I realized that it was not happening to me, it had happened to them. Believing in God or being angry at God kept me waking up in the morning. My struggle was documented in a blog or two here.

A personal question here, did you abandon God after you were diagnosed? I mean that in nothing more than the question that it is. As I said, I had the same questions, the same thoughts.

Lastly, You are right, you don't need to believe in order to open your heart, but it seems that the bigger hearts and the biggest helpers are those that have faith.

I am so glad to hear the good news you and yours have been blessed with...
It matters not what others try and do to tear down your happiness and what you believe are factors in the outcome.   Arguing these matters accomplish nothing.....some thrive on the process of tearing down, so be it.   It's best to just be happy and ignore........

Forgive me if I am taking liberties w/ your post. But, I think you have (in your own words) explained how I began my journey towards non-belief in god. My comments to your post are in red (within your post).

There is much adversity in the world today (There ALWAYS has been and WILL BE adversity – belief in ANY god has not changed that. That’s just the way life IS.) many who find themselves overwhelmed turn to religion (True Religion acts as a crutch when one’s life is difficult). (Some) Criminals seek solace in the word of God and actually change for the better (most do not change for the better, many are repeat offenders),( with very few) becoming model citizens. Addictions are overcome with the help of God. (But, sometimes one can pray 24/7 and nothing happens. 12-step programs and hospital stays for REHAB are almost ALWAYS required. Praying is NO guarantee.

Those that do not believe can site the preachers who prey on the elderly and the poor by using and exploiting the word of God for their own monetary gain. (Not to mention the priests who abuse young boys. Although this had NOTHING to do w/ my leaving the church) The weekend Christians who attend church on Sunday and proclaim themselves to be holier than thou while committing what the bible calls sin for the rest of the week. (I’m sure we ALL know people like this.)

The mind is a powerful tool. (This is the most relevant statement you made.) If you give an unlucky person a "good luck" charm, they suddenly become lucky. (There is not such thing as “good luck” charms. If you know someone who has one and it works, please tell me.) Give someone a sugar pill or placebo and tell them that it will make them feel better, they start to feel better. Tell someone that they look pale and ill, suddenly they start feeling ill. (BINGO……..here’s where you hit the nail on the head. Religion/god is a PLACEBO. I couldn't’t have said it BETTER.)

I can offer the non-believers nothing that will prove to them beyond a doubt that God does exist, just as they can offer me no proof beyond a doubt that he does not. (This is interesting. Don’t you think when someone makes an extraordinary claim, such as God/angels/heaven/hell, etc., it should require some extraordinary evidence? Or, I’d settle for ANYTHING verifiable….any evidence at all. Like, if someone told me that tickling myself w/ a feather would cure my MS, I’d want some proof. Yeah, I might give it a try but, eventually, when I saw it did not work, I  wold say “what a crock of crap”. )

If God is nothing more than an idea of something good (Again, that’s pretty much all god is..and idea...a myth......kinda like Santa Claus...an idea of something good), a thought of something better after death (That’s the best thing about non-belief, I don’t EVER worry after AFTER death, I just make sure LIFE is as good as it can be), the comfort felt knowing that a loved one is in a better place. If God, or the belief in God gives someone a feeling of purpose, belief in themselves and opens up their hearts to help others, what's wrong with that? (Nothing, although one does not NEED god to have a purpose or believe in oneself or to open ones heart to help others. I (a former believer) am PROOF of that.)

And again, I apologize for hijacking your post.

In the end, we each have to face our belief or non-belief and live and
die with it...I have enough evidence to believe.  Good post. Glad your wife overcame cancer twice!
