I agree with Justi ....
No matter WHAT the state of the economy, there will always be folks who have jobs and money (that's not to say they are always synonymous). Nice post! I love your simple, yet pointed, observations. Thanks! (BTW, I'm one of the many who are currently unemployed; one thing that does seem to be consistent regarding money is that having time and having money are inversely proportional. Just my opinion based on experience ...)

no restaurants or other businesses close and they sit there empty but someone else will have another building built, real smart to me

Seems to me that places are open are doing well, but it's tough to say without really looking at the books.
The thing I don't see in my area is that when something closes nothing is coming in to take its place.

I'm finding right now that the businesses that have adjusted to meet
the current conditions are doing well. Can't explain the Nieman Marcus outlet lines--that's a mystery to me. But, applebee's is actively persuing a clintel looking to save a few bucks. Almost everybody knows of their $10 meal deal (which to tell you the truth doesn't impress me much).

Some stores are finally selling us items at the price they should be and they are still making a profit.

I'm no financial expert, but to me it seems that this crisis has some good points too. A couple of weeks ago I could buy a new furnace that normally costs around 3000 euro (3900 in dollars) for only 1000 euro! I needed a new furnace, but the three thousand was a bit too much at that moment. So now I have a sparkling new furnace for a third of the price, so I'm very glad. I have no savings either, so I couldn't have lost my money in the bank crisis.
