I am from E.Oregon and going to Mexico we encountered a lot of creepy crawlies there too. I also liked the lizards, as long as they were under 6 inches.

your descriptions of your life in Key West are like being there!
I'm enjoying each vignette, piecing together the larger picture.
By the way, lizards bob like that as a territorial thing. And the throat thing, too. They are telling you you're too close. Mating ritual does come into to it, too, but I doubt that's what they are suggesting. 
How about posting some photos? Do you get lots of pelicans?
