LOL that last bit read funny
I meant to say that I want a sane and pleasant relationship with my son and not one filled with conflict and distress.

You are so right TAPS and because it is family
we often keep beating our head against the wall in order to make things somehow right or better. However we can't always sustain the masochistic drubbing and should not. I have learnt to withdraw and not have too many expectations as far as emotive support goes. Whew I go and go off to lick my wounds. I would much rather have a pleasant sane relationship with my family and am determined that my son's and my relationship is not like that .

I have no idea what I did to that last comment to make it double and to make the first part blue and underlined.  Sometimes it seems that for me internet has a life and mind of its own.

There is a lot of hurt in the world because of negative family dynamics and dysfunctional family situations.  It is so sad that family members have so much trouble communicating in a loving and generous way, which is the best way for improving those family dynamics.  If loving communication is impossible, one needs to learn when it is time to move on for self-preservation.
