As you appear to have guessed, it is a corruption of the word "Weblog." A corruption such as the popular word "frag" back in the Viet Nam "war." (technically called a "military action") It was a shortened version of "fragmentation grenade" to describe the intentional murder of an American officer, by "friendly fire." His own troops! If you ask me, the term "friendly fire" is the biggest corruption possible, like another oxymoron,"military intelligence."
