I agree, a person is a soul and should be respected as such.

Vogue
We have an expression "You poor thing",  that has been used for me on occasion, for example, when I was suffering from a severe case of the flu, and I wouldn't dream of being offended! On the contrary, the tone, facial expression and all the rest tell me that I am not really a thing in that person's eyes, but that I am being loved for the poor sick puppy I am, LOL. Not that the idea I was a 'thing' would have ever occurred to me! And I have been using it myself, without any untoward consequences and reactions...

sometimes, we use figures of speech without really "hearing" it.  Interesting post, Vogue - as usual.  Mal (counting the days!)

Okay...
...my girlfriend is the best "person" to ever happen to me.
Nah...I'll stick with "thing." If someone told me I was the best "thing" to ever happen to them, why would I be offended?

I can't agree with you more... Words say more than what their meaning is... how we use them and where also tells what we are thinking at the time ... Great observation  my friend :-)
