I just happen to be a person that thinks the reason for illness is what man
has done to earth, to the air, water and the food we eat.  So we cause our own suffering as far as illness goes.  As to being happy, we are like doctors practicing medicine, we are practicing life and loving and the outcome is not always happiness.  We just do the best we can.

Problem of suffering.
I too have always found religious explanations of the problem of suffering very hard to accept; if God is loving and just, how can he permit injustice and suffering? This is the theme of the Book of Job, perhaps you might be interested to read about it.   http://http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_of_Job

There is a karmic relationship for the sufferings or the pains or the type of birth we get in this world. Depending on the previous karmas, our extent of sufferings, pain etc is decided . One can surely escape this kind of pains /sufferings given to us , by raising our own understanding of Universal intelligence and kind of response we choose to handle suffering / pains etc. Just believe that " God give us pain, bcoz he believes we can handle them and can come out stronger".
