Of course I understand why a mother would be worried! But, considering the number of surfers out there, the chances of a shark attack are really rather low. I tried surfing once in Nova Scotia (where we don't have many sharks anyway), but I had a hell of a time remaining upright on the board, so I finally gave up and stuck to swimming...

Surfing looks like such fun for a youngster with good balance.
I enjoy those movies and clips of people catching the big waves. But there was a photo once of a joyful surfer on his way down the wall of water, and above him the shadow of a giant shark. It may have been Photoshopped, but it was a terrifying photo. Like this blog, it's enough to scare the shit out of me. So I'll watch from shore, where the big dangers are gulls dropping their little souvenirs or sand fleas.
